Racing To New Horizons
Yes, you may have heard the more than heroic racehorse, Barbaro, was euthanized today after many months of miraculous successes in his mighty recovery. Watching him win the Derby last May was reminiscent of Secretariat’s astounding performance(s). Barbaro was equal to dirt tracks (though began his career on turf) and was undefeated until that fateful, horrifying Preakness Race two weeks after the Derby. Thank you … those who said little prayers for him. Yes, I am a fan(atic?) of the races. Yes, I geeked out and checked his progress each week since May as the surgeon posted the updates. Yes, I had just checked with concern but optimism two days ago reading of his latest surgery over the weekend (one of many he sailed right through). He was doing so well in recent weeks. I expect if he weren’t a Bay, he’d be the white horse of Revelation! That’s just how big a heart and spirit he had. Godspeed Barbaro. Frolic forever in green pastures. Give Sunday Silence & Ruffian a nudge and a ney for me!

About the Name
No. GenuineRisk is not some overt adult chatroom moniker (not for me anyway). Genuine Risk is the filly racehorse who won the 1980 Kentucky Derby, which in itself is a little bit freakish, but her Dam was “Virtuous” – she’s no floosie. I like her story for many reasons which is why I pen myself after her. Her name stands for what is genuine and true. For me, it calls to mind steadfastness in hardship. Genuine Risk, when retired to broodmare, had trouble foaling for years. She continually produced stillborns or miscarried. Until 1993, when her first live foal … Genuine Reward was born. And later … after further difficulty … her only other live foal was born and named Count Our Blessing.
Risk Reward. Count Our Blessing. Something to think about.
(… and her grandson was called … Genuine Regard. Seems about right!)
*Genuine Risk passed away from old age on August 18, 2008 after eating a hearty breakfast and being turned out to pasture. She was glorious. And she’s just the tip of the Creator’s iceberg.

I haven’t been gifted with the love of horses as you have… but your obvious love for these beasts shows.
Great hearts are beating
Thundering heavenly sound
His great race at hand!
When they run, I feel His pleasure.
